SpaceX’s Starlink applies for permits to enter Indian Market

Elon Musk’s Starlink has reportedly set to apply for permits to launch their broadband-from-space services in India this year. The permit for a global mobile personal communications by satellite services (GMPCS) is required to provide high-speed internet services, and Starlink by SpaceX will be the third company after OneWeb and Reliance Jio to enter this market. This move came at a time of India’s introduction to 5G connectivity.

After a failed attempt last year in 2021, Starlink refunded pre orders of those who applied to Starlink’s broadband connection, as the Indian government had not granted them the licence to operate yet.

This time Starlink will also seek statutory approval from the government for market access and landing rights, along with permission to set up local gateways for which they must get the green signal from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
