Netflix's The Crown Season 5 and what we know till date

The Crown is yet another one of Netflix’s most-viewed shows with 242 million minutes of viewership during the first week of March of its release.  Its fantastic production, storytelling and acting, have gained it a huge following. The viewers are highly anticipating the latest season 5 this November 2022, in which Imelda Staunton is expected to take on the role of an older Queen.

Imelda Staunton who is well known for her role of Professor Umbridge in the Harry Potter series is all set to take the baton from Claire Foy and Olivia Coleman who are known to carry the role outstandingly well and won several awards for it. Staunton mentioned it herself when she announced her role in season 5; of how she hopes to do justice to the role as her predecessors have. Viewers are curious to see Imelda Staunton fit the role of Queen, especially at a time when the Queen was going through one of her most eventful years- dealing with the failing marriages of three of her children and the fire at Windsor Castle amongst others.

In fact, there are speculations that it may cover her famous 40th anniversary speech as Queen where she called her year ‘Annus Horribilis’: meaning a year of disaster and misfortune.

Amongst these unfortunate events was the tragic death of Princess Diana and her relationship dynamics with Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. Season 5 is set to cover all of this, and the most awaited events that the viewers are curious to see executed remain to be the tragic death of Princess Diana and her infamous BBC interview which is seen to be quoted even to this day.

Although The Crown has been criticized for dramatizing some factual events, intense research has gone into the show and people love to see how the reality had been with a pinch of that spice played out well.

Among the confirmed cast, Lesley Manville will play Princess Margaret, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, Dominic West as Prince Charles, Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles, John Lee Miller as the conservative Prime Minister and

The first ever Pakistani actor on a Netflix show will join as Diana’s romantic interest, Dr Hasnat Khan.

The cast was seen shooting in Scotland earlier in summer 2021 and Netflix has made the confirmation of a season 6. This has had viewers wonder if any of the younger Princes Harry or William would also be covered, keeping in mind the sensational headlines that the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry made last year. But nothing of the sort has been confirmed by the creators.
